Ten Electrical Safety Tips for Every Home

5/22/2023 (Permalink)

Emergency board up for a residential fire If your home has had a fire, it is important that you don't use electronics that were close to the blaze.

In this modern world, electricity currents are coursing all around us in our homes, helping us accomplish our daily activities. But remember that electricity still poses a possible danger to your home. Avoid accidentally causing a fire with these electrical safety tips.

Keep Your Electrical System Up-to-Date

If you’re in an older home with outdated wiring, you need to contact an electrical professional to take a look at the state of your home’s wiring. Over time, elements of your wiring may have degraded or been damaged. Older wiring also may not be able to provide the power needed to keep all of your technology and appliances running. The amount of energy is greater per each appliance today than the items they used 20 or 50 years ago. Getting it checked out and upgraded if needed will keep your home safe.

Use Appliances with Caution

Make sure you’re using appliances or items with electrical connections correctly. This means keeping appliances away from water and moisture. Another tip is to give your technology that generates internal heat space to breathe. This will allow air to circulate properly and keep the appliance or device from overheating.

Regularly Check your Electrical Cords

It’s a good safety measure to regularly check the most frequently used electrical cords in your home. Check them for frays and cracks; these can leave holes for electricity to run through and harm anything it touches. If you do discover frays and cracks, stop using that cord and get a replacement. Don’t cover cords with fabric material such as a rug or modify cords yourself. If you believe that your cords are damaged, ask a professional to take a look. To make your cords last longer, unplug them by grabbing at the base of the plug instead of yanking it out of the wall by the cord section.

Avoid Overloading Outlets

Overloading an outlet is one of the most common causes of a house fire. Don’t try to put too many plugs into one outlet. If you require more outlets than your power strip can handle, then it’s time to look into getting more outlets installed in your home.

Warm Outlets? Beware

A glaring sign of an electrical issue in your home is a warm or hot outlet. Warmth or sparking from an outlet often means that electricity is arcing inside. Using outlets like this puts your home at risk of a fire. Call an electrical professional to fix the problem.

Don’t Ignore Frequently Flickering Lights

It’s typical for lights to flicker every once in a while. But if the lights throughout your house are constantly flickering, then it’s a possible sign that your home’s wiring system can’t handle the amount of power used daily. There may be too many connections on a single circuit, or you may need to replace your electrical panel.

Block Unused Outlets

If you have small children living in your home, then we suggest you block any unused outlets for their safety. The last thing that needs to happen is an accident because a child was unknowingly playing with an outlet. Cover unused outlets with a solid plate or plug them up with safe plug covers.

Ground Older Appliances

Grounding means that electrical energy is being directed from the appliance to the earth with a resistant conductor. Check to see if your appliance is grounded properly, if not, it can pose a safety threat. If you have older or large appliances with a two-prong plug, you should replace them with a new version that has the ground prong for your safety.

Be Familiar with Your Breakers

You should be familiar with the electrical breakers in every home you live in. If you notice your breakers tripping frequently, then it may mean that you’re overloading a circuit. You need to reconfigure your appliances or update your wiring system to prevent this from continuing or turning into a bigger safety hazard.

Precautionary Measures To Prevent a Fire on Your Property

4/17/2023 (Permalink)

protecting your home Not only can we help save on costly replacements, we're pretty efficient at getting your home or business running again in no time.

Fires are dangerous and can pose serious risks to your health and property. Experiencing a fire can be a life-changing event for your family or business. What’s more concerning is that property fires are not uncommon. According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), 1.35 million fires in 2021 caused 3,800 civilian fire deaths, 14,700 reported fire injuries and $15.9 billion worth of property damage.

The good news is SERVPRO of Denton experts can repair your property back to preloss conditions in these situations. Many causes of fires are preventable, and following fire safety tips can help keep you from falling victim to a property blaze.

Keep Matches and Lighters Out of Kids’ Reach

One of the simplest yet most effective ways to prevent a fire on your property is to keep matches, lighters, and other sources of ignition out of children’s reach. It’s also a good idea to teach kids about fire safety, conveying the message that matches and lighters are tools for adults to use, not toys for them to play with.

Install and Test Smoke Alarms Regularly

A 2021 report by the NFPA revealed that almost three out of five home fire deaths occurred in homes without smoke alarms (41 percent) or faulty detectors (16 percent). Smoke alarms and detectors give you and your loved ones enough time to escape during a fire, so it’s crucial to ensure you have them and that they’re working properly.

It’s best to install the detectors on every level of your home, inside bedrooms, and adjacent corridors. Moreover, testing your alarms every month, replacing the batteries at least once a year, and keeping the detectors clean can help toward fire prevention.

Have a Fire Extinguisher Ready

Besides checking your smoke alarms, having working fire extinguishers inside your home is also critical in the event of a fire. They aid in first-aid fire-fighting, helping you put out small fires or suppress flames until help arrives.

Considering their importance, it’s also vital that you know how to use them. Reading the directions and familiarizing yourself with how your unit operates is a good idea since you won’t have the time to do so during a fire.

Never Smoke Inside

It may seem unlikely, but cigarettes can cause destructive residential fires. The additives and materials inside them can continue to smolder even if you think you’ve put them out, and the flame can then ignite on your bed or inside your trash can and start a fire.

The most straightforward way to save yourself from having to enlist fire damage restoration is to smoke outside the home. It’s also a good idea to use deep ashtrays with water to ensure the cigarette butts are fully extinguished.

Cook With Care and Attention

A report by the NFPA also revealed that cooking activities started an average of 172,900 home structure fires every year from 2014 to 2018. The leading cause of cooking fires and the resulting casualties? Unattended cooking.

Here are some practical fire safety tips worth following to stay safe in the kitchen:

  • Never leave any cooking unattended.
  • Avoid wearing loose or long-sleeved clothing when cooking, as it can ignite if you get too close to the range.
  • Turn all pot and skillet handles inward to keep kids from reaching into and toppling over a hot pot.
  • Put combustible materials like paper products, dish towels, or oven mitts away from the stovetop.
  • Clean spilled grease as soon as it cools, as built-up grease is combustible.
  • Never use water to put out the flames in case of a grease fire, as the water will quickly turn into steam and cause severe burns.
  • Instead, smother the flames using a fire blanket or fire extinguisher.

Practice Open Fire Safety

Fireplaces can be a cozy way to keep your home warm during winter. However, it pays to remember that they also present a fire risk, especially if used without care.

To keep your house comfortably warm and safe, it helps to have your chimney cleaned every late summer or fall before you start using it more regularly for the colder months. Once winter comes in, installing a fireplace screen helps keep the burning embers from spreading into the room and accidentally burning anyone near it.

Check Your Wirings and Appliances

If your home is an older one, it’s a good idea to have your electrical wiring system checked by a qualified electrician. Left unaddressed, issues like worn-out insulation, outdated wiring, frequently tripping breakers, and warm outlets can cause electrical malfunctions and lead to overwhelming house fires.

Besides checking your property’s wiring, it’s also crucial to use your appliances wisely. Here are some pointers to remember:

  • Replace cracked or frayed electrical cords immediately.
  • If an appliance begins to smoke or produce an unusual smell, unplug it right away and have it repaired.
  • Avoid plugging large appliances into extension cords.
  • Keep combustible materials like curtains and furniture away from space heaters.

Be Extra Careful During the Holidays

Winter holidays like Thanksgiving and Christmas are among the leading days of the year for home fires, so it’s best to remain aware of precautionary measures throughout the celebrations. Boost your fire prevention efforts by keeping these tips in mind:

  • Be Careful With Your Turkey Fryers: Since they require large amounts of boiling oil and are often placed on a stand, make sure to only use them outdoors. Putting them on a stable surface and keeping kids and pets away at all times also helps prevent accidents and injuries.
  • Take Care of Your Christmas Tree: Watering it every day is crucial as dried-out trees can easily catch fire.
  • Inspect Your Holiday Lights Before Use: Before you light up your decorations, ensure you’re not plugging more than three sets of lights into a single extension cord. You’ll also want to check for frayed, cracked or damaged cords.

6 Steps to Fire Damage Restoration

If you have suffered from fire damage, and your home has sustained smoke damage or soot damage, you may wonder what your next step should be. Navigating the fire cleanup process can be difficult and confusing, but here are the SERVPRO of Denton guidelines to follow to make your course of action a bit easier.

  1. Call for Emergency Services

Contact a fire restoration company as soon as possible. Most companies offer 24-hour services and can assist you right away.

  1. Appraisal of Damage

Most companies send a professional to assess your home for smoke damage, soot damage and water damage. From there, it is possible to create a plan for repair.

  1. Damage Prevention

Fires frequently damage or threaten the integrity of windows, doors, roofs or walls. These can all be temporarily repaired so that further damage does not occur before the fire restoration process can take place.

  1. Water, Smoke and Soot Removal

Once you have ensured that your home does not sustain additional damage, the fire restoration company can begin to remove water from the home and repair water damage, if there is any. Smoke cleaning and soot cleaning occur at this point to remove traces of the fire from the surfaces of your home, such as ceilings, walls and floors.

  1. Cleaning and Disinfecting

The next step is for the company to clean and repair any salvageable items in the house, such as furniture or cabinetry. In addition, the air is usually scrubbed by special equipment to improve the air quality inside your home.

  1. Restoration of Finishes

After the major structures and furniture have been repaired, it is time to bring your home back to its pre-fire condition. Sometimes, this is minor, such as repainting a room. Other times, it can be more complicated, such as small construction projects.

What To Do with Candle Soot on Walls

9/28/2022 (Permalink)

lit candles lit candles

ERVPRO of Denton knows everyone loves a good candle to bring warmth to the room. Candles can provide a beautiful ambiance and aroma, whether by your bedside or in the bathroom, but they don’t come without hazards. Candle soot on walls, furniture, or other surfaces can do serious damage if ignored. Here’s a quick guide to help you recognize the early signs of candle soot, remove it from your space and help prevent future damage.

What causes candle soot on walls?

Think about the last time you left wax burning. Do you remember seeing a black smudge on the edge of the glass or the wall nearby? That is a clear sign of a soot problem. Soot forms when the wax is drawn to the wick faster than it can burn, causing an incomplete chemical reaction. As the extra unburned wax releases into the air, it leaves behind a dirty mess.

Though candle soot on walls can cause a mess and damage physical property, it is unlikely that an incorrectly burned candle will present any health risks to you or your family.

Curious about how to clean candle soot from your space? Start with a dry-cleaning sponge and absorb what you can from the mess. These sponges will be gentle on your surfaces and help reduce the likelihood of ruining paint or finishes. If it is still not doing the job, consider adding a small amount of rubbing alcohol to your cloth.

For more significant stains, it’s always best to call in professionals. SERVPRO® of Denton can provide commercial cleaning support with all the right tools to remove soot stains without damaging your property. In some cases, odor removal services may be helpful to get rid of that “smoky” smell. You can always contact SERVPRO® of Denton for pointers on how to get candle soot off walls and prevent soot smudges from causing long-term fire damage.

How can I prevent candle soot or other damage?

You don’t have to give up candles to protect your belongings. To burn the wax correctly and prioritize safety, follow these essential burning tips:

  • Trim your wicks before burning
  • Watch out for mushroom wicks
  • Remove extra debris from the wax
  • Raise your candle containers
  • Avoid moving the candle while hot

Not only do these practices help reduce the amount of soot produced by the wax, but they can often extend the burn-time of a candle.

It’s also critical to mention the importance of following general fire safety practices when using candles. Emergencies happen all the time, but a wick-gone-wrong is preventable. In general, keep these three rules in mind:

  • Don’t place candles near drafts
  • Don’t place candles near flammable material
  • Don’t leave a candle unattended

In an emergency, contact 911 for first responder support, and exit the property. Once the area is clear, certified professionals can help you repair or restore damage to your home. At SERVPRO® of Denton, our fire damage process begins with a thorough inspection and damage assessment to plan our next steps. Based on the job and our findings, we will proceed with:

  • Immediate board-up and roof-tarp service
  • Water removal and drying
  • Smoke and soot removal
  • Sanitization and general clean-up
  • Damage restoration

Though not every restoration project may look the same, our team at SERVPRO® of Denton values creating personalized action plans that meet the needs of your space.

Solving the Candle Soot Problem

Remember, burning a candle doesn't inherently cause candle soot on walls—but burning a candle incorrectly can create debris and other unsightly or potentially hazardous consequences. By practicing fire safety habits, including the proper management of wicks, you can enjoy all the wonderful benefits of candlelight.

What Is Soot and How It Can Be Dangerous

9/28/2022 (Permalink)

black soot hands black soot hands

Regardless of a fire’s size, soot is an often-overlooked problem that can have significant repercussions down the road. Those little black smudges can cause considerable damage to your property and health.SERVPRO® of Denton, we provide both comprehensive home and commercial cleaning services that give our clients the peace of mind that the little details—like soot stains—are taken care of. To help you better recognize fire damage after an emergency, here’s a quick guide to soot in your space.

What is soot? (and other common questions)

Let’s get down to the soot basics. In order to both recognize and appropriately remove soot, it’s good to have a foundational knowledge of how it’s caused and what it looks like. Here are some of the most frequently asked questions from our clients:

What causes black soot on walls and materials?

Simply put, soot is the tiny particle that comes from incomplete combustion; it’s the black substance that comes from burning wood or other materials. While you might be most familiar with large-scale cinders and residue from fires, have you ever noticed those small black smudges near a burning candle? That’s soot, too! You don’t need to have a fire disaster to see the fire damage.

What does soot look like?

Most commonly, soot appears as black streaks on surfaces near a fire. It might be easy to confuse soot with mold; the similarities in color and patterns make them similar. Both can come out of nowhere, and both can do a lot of damage! Before touching the fire damaged area (which can be dangerous), you can make smart assumptions based on the black streak’s location. Ask yourself:

  • Is this damage near an electrical outlet or appliance?
  • Is this damage near space in my property where I have candles, a fireplace, or other combustible materials?
  • Is this damage at the bottom of a door where carpet may be filtering soot from the air?
  • Is this damage near a part of the wall that could be affected by the heating system?

If you answered “yes” to any of these questions, there’s a good chance you’re dealing with soot and not mold. In contrast, mold will grow in areas with excess moisture, such as in between shower tiles or on a bathroom wall.

Can I remove soot?

The simple answer is yes—but that doesn’t mean you should tackle every soot damage project. A small smudge from a candle is likely cleanable with a small cloth dampened in rubbing alcohol. More significant soot damage from a fire should be handled by professionals. Agitating the soot with incorrect substances can make the damage worse.

Is there any way to prevent soot?

Yes! It all comes down to preparation. For large-scale damage, make sure that your home or commercial space has a fire emergency plan and a fully functioning fire sprinkler system. Regular maintenance and upkeep of your fire prevention tools will help reduce damage in an emergency.

For more small-scale prevention, use high-quality candles with short wicks on the candle stand to reduce excess heat. Schedule regular maintenance of your kitchen appliances to help ensure that they’re in good working condition as well.

Understanding Soot Hazards

Soot might seem like a small, black smudge, but it can do a lot of damage if left untreated. Three primary hazards that soot may cause are to your:

  • Health:
  • Property:
  • Technology:

Because of the significant risks that soot poses, we recommend working with a professional cleaning service to remove and remediate the damage as soon as possible. SERVPRO® of Denton not only offers these services but can provide additional odor removal support for the hard-to-get-rid-of smoky smells. Our odor removal process involves removing the cause of the odor, cleaning affected surfaces, and sealing any other surfaces that may require extra attention.

What should I do when I see soot damage?

Suppose you’ve recently had a fire in your home or commercial space. In that case, there’s a high possibility you have unaddressed smoke or soot damage. If you notice those pesky black smudges or simply want to help ensure you’re safe, reach out to SERVPRO® of Denton to schedule a consultation and inspection. Our team will create a fire damage plan from our services based on our initial analysis, customized to your needs.

Battery Changes

Having smoke alarms is great, as long as you always remember to make sure they’re working. Test the smoke alarms once per month, and if the batteries are dead, replace them.

 Checking The Home

Be sure to check certain systems in your home regularly. You may even want to hire a professional to ensure that your home is thoroughly inspected. The things you should regularly check include; the condition of your home’s electrical system, the natural gas/LP gas system in your home, and the air conditioning and heating units in your home.

Kitchen Safety

One of the most common causes of house fires is something going wrong in the kitchen. To ensure your safety in the kitchen,  SERVPRO®? of Denton wants you to follow these practices: When you’re cooking on a stove and need to leave the stove for a minute or two, turn it off rather than letting it cook unattended. Safe Use of Wires

Faulty wiring and outlets are one of the top causes of house fires. So make sure your wires and outlets are working properly. Do not attempt to plug or unplug anything if your hands are wet. Also, don’t pinch or cover electrical cords with items like rugs.

3 Questions About Caring for Leather Furniture After Fire Damage

9/26/2022 (Permalink)

leather item Leather Item

If you’re wondering how to properly care for leather after it's been affected by fire damage, you’ve come to the right place! SERVPRO® of Denton has some helpful tips that could save your personal or professional belongings.

How Can Leather Be Cleaned?

When it comes to cleaning, leather upholstery typically needs to be dusted and vacuumed on a weekly basis. You can wipe it down with a dry microfiber cloth, or a damp cloth if the dust is thicker. Remember to never, ever use a soaking wet cloth on your leather upholstery. Use your vacuum’s cleaning attachment to vacuum corners, nooks, and crannies in leather furniture. It’ll do wonders!

How Often Should Leather Be Conditioned?

After that first step, comes conditioning. Leather conditioning is just as important as leather cleaning! Leather furniture should be conditioned once to twice a year, depending on the amount of wear and tear it endures on a daily basis, and quickly it’s drying out.

What Causes Leather to Dry Out?

Leather is similar to our skin, which needs to stay moisturized in order to remain healthy and in good condition. What causes leather to dry out? Well, if your sofa or chair is near an air vent, or a sunny window, it could dry out and fade quicker than if it were placed away from the vent/window (or if the window were covered).

SERVPRO®? of Denton has experience with cleaning, conditioning, and caring for leather furniture! Especially after fire damage and water damage. If your furniture is in need of a little bit of tender loving care, don’t be afraid to contact SERVPRO®? of Denton. We can clean and restore your leather to its original condition, and you’ll love the results! Our motto is to make this disaster feel “Like It Never Even Happened.”

With Fire Damage, Expect Water Damage, Too

9/1/2021 (Permalink)

Image of home kitchen following house fire damage. Fire damage can take a toll, but so can water damage incurred from putting out the original fire.

Imagine a restoration company shows up at your house after you’ve had a fire, and the first thing they check for is water damage. Doesn’t that seem a little counterintuitive, especially considering how fire and water are opposites?

However, fire and water are much more like kindred spirits than you would think, especially when it comes to how they impact each other in damaging structures, spaces and belongings.

When there is fire damage, there is almost always going to be water damage. Think about when the fire department is involved in a house fire — most likely, your space will get hosed down. Or if your building has a sprinkler system that can be triggered by smoke or intense heat, the structure that has been burned will be immediately soaked with water. Consider the way fire can bend and damage structures, including pipes that may leak within a building.

All of these scenarios can occur because of fire damage, so it is necessary that whatever restoration company you’re working with must understand the ins and outs of fire damage restoration but be well-versed in other categories of restoration as well.

This is especially true because water restoration is a major part (and the first task) of the fire damage restoration process. Before someone can effectively treat your fire damaged household, you must first mitigate the water damage. This includes examining and evaluating the damage that may have been done to your drywall, floors, ceilings and/or belongings.

Also, did you know that if water stays around long enough, it can result in mold growth and damage? So fire damage can start the domino effect causing your space to be damaged by other elements.

That’s why SERVPRO® of Denton provides experts and services for all types of damage restoration — fire, water, mold storm and commercial. This way, you don’t have to wait for the water restoration company to show up before you can start the fire restoration process. You can have them treated simultaneously!

If you ever have damage from not only one but multiple causes, make sure to invest in a company like SERVPRO® of Denton that has its hand in all aspects of restoration. Otherwise, you’ll end up spending a lot more time and money than necessary.

Learn the Different Types of Fire Extinguishers

9/1/2021 (Permalink)

Image of fire extinguishers posed together Did you know there was more than one kind of fire extinguisher? Now you do!

Maybe you’ve never used one. Maybe you’ve never seen one or owned one (which, in that case, you should). Whatever the case, fire extinguishers are crucial to understand in terms of safely preparing for the unexpected.

At SERVPRO® of Denton, we hope to educate you so you feel confident and prepared to fight any fire before it causes too much damage. With this in mind, you should know the basic types of fire extinguishers.

There are five types — A, B, C, D and K (or F) and each class signals the type of fire the extinguisher can be used to put out.

Class A

These are typically used to put out fires on ordinary combustible materials such as paper, rubber, wood, cloth and plastics. Class A extinguishers are usually found in homes or businesses and use water (red label), dry powder (blue label), foam (cream label) or wet chemicals (yellow label) to absorb the heat or coat the fire.

Class B

These extinguishers are used on fires that originate from flammable liquids and gases such as oil, fuel, solvents, lacquers or alcohols. They can be found in homes or businesses as well and can use dry powder, foam and carbon dioxide (black label) to put out the fire.

Class C

These are used against electrical fires from wires, panels or circuit breakers and can be found in homes and businesses. They release material like dry powder to stop the conduction of electricity so the fire cannot continue to ignite.

Class D

These extinguishers are used on combustible metals such as magnesium, sodium, aluminium, titanium, potassium and zirconium. They are typically found in factories and use dry powder to put out the fire.

Class K (or F)

These extinguishers are reserved for commercial use such as in restaurant kitchens. They are effective on fires that were caused by cooking fats, greases or oils and use a process called saponification which releases an alkaline agent foam to trap vapors and put the fire out. Inside these are wet chemicals (yellow label).

How to use a fire extinguisher

All of this information is pretty useless unless you know how to use a fire extinguisher, which is why this little acronym PASS should help you remember how to put out a fire.

Pull the pin in the extinguisher to break the seal.

Aim the extinguisher low with the nozzle pointing toward the bottom of the fire.

Squeeze the extinguisher’s handle to release whatever agent is inside.

Sweep the nozzle from side to side, still pointing it toward the base of the fire until it is fully extinguished.

If the fire continues to re-ignite, repeat the last three steps until the fire is completely out. Remember to keep your distance, act swiftly and always stay safe in the event of a fire.

The Science Behind Putting Out a Fire

7/26/2021 (Permalink)

Fire extinguisher putting out a fire When it comes to controlling, and ultimately extinguishing, a fire, it's helpful to know what you're dealing with.

As the summer goes on, the chance for a fire to ignite continues — whether it be from a grilling accident or the heat of the sun.

Fire can easily destroy a home or business in minutes, so it’s important to understand the basics behind putting out a fire.

At SERVPRO® of Denton, we value your safety and hope to educate you on potential threats to your safety.

What is fire?

First, we must understand how fire works. Fire is a chemical reaction — combustion, to be exact. Flammable substances will combine with the oxygen in the air to produce water, carbon dioxide and waste gases, creating a lot of heat.

This doesn’t happen spontaneously. Typically, there must be something to ignite fire, which is found in activation energy (produced by a spark, match, the sun or an overheating machine).

The fire triangle and how to break it

It’s important to understand that there are three elements that must be present for a fire to ignite:

  • Fuel (the substance that will burn, like wood or coal)
  • Oxygen (from the air)
  • Heat

To stop a fire, you have to remove one of these elements.

In order to remove heat, it’s best to dump some water on the fire. This cools the fuel down to below the ignition temperature, putting a pin in the combustion cycle. If you want to remove oxygen, you can smother the fire to prevent its exposure to air. You can do this by covering the fire with a heavy blanket or dumping nonflammable substances on it such as sand or baking soda. Removing fuel is much more difficult, especially in house fires as the house itself counts as fuel. Typically, fuel will only be removed after the fire has burned it up.

The usual way of putting out a fire is by using a fire extinguisher, which is basically a giant aerosol. Though there are different types of extinguishers, most of them fight the fires by separating the fuel from the oxygen.

In all circumstances, make sure to take preventative and proactive measures to keep yourself and your loved ones safe. And be sure to call SERVPRO® of Denton with any fire restoration needs: (940) 566-2277.

How to Prepare for a Safe Fourth Of July

6/30/2021 (Permalink)

Woman holding a sparkler Fireworks are a fun tradition on the Fourth of July, but only if you're safe!

It’s that time of the year again — barbecue, parades and, of course, fireworks and sparklers! But with great celebrations, especially ones involving fire, comes great responsibility. That’s why SERVPRO of Denton has you covered when preparing for a safe Fourth of July.

Though fireworks are legal, that doesn’t mean they’re necessarily safe. In fact, the National Safety Council advises people to enjoy public displays of fireworks conducted by professionals. But if you do choose to use them at home, make sure to follow some essential tips to ensure a safe Fourth of July:

  • Keep children safe by never allowing younger children to handle fireworks and ensuring that adults supervise older children.
  • Stay sober minded when using fireworks and never try to use them while impaired by drugs or alcohol.
  • Protect your body parts by wearing protective eyewear and avoiding holding lighted fireworks.
  • Light them in the right place and avoid using them indoors and in close proximity to people, houses and other flammable materials.
  • Keep a safe distance from others by not pointing or throwing them at people and maintaining a safe distance after you light them.
  • Be careful with malfunctioning fireworks and never re-light or try to handle them but keep a bucket of water nearby to extinguish them (or in case there is a fire).

The same seriousness should be taken when using sparklers as they burn at about 2,000 degrees, which is hot enough to melt some metals. The National Fire Protection Association states that sparklers account for more than 25% of emergency room visits for firework-related injuries.

Consider using safer alternatives such as glow sticks, confetti poppers and colored streamers, or just sit back and watch the experts do it. But most of all, have fun this Fourth of July and do it safely!

And remember that we are a phone call away, 24 hours a day: (940) 566-2277.

Steps to Prevent a Fire

6/7/2021 (Permalink)

Photo of a fire extinguisher in a home living room We're experts in fire damage restoration, but we've also got some tips to help mitigate the risk of a fire in the first place.

Our experts at SERVPRO of Denton are trained to be faster to any disaster, and to restore fire damage "Like it never even happened." You know we’re always a phone call away.

With that said, however, there are still a number of easy steps you can take around your home or commercial property to mitigate the risk of a fire before it happens. Take a look:

Check Your Smoke Detectors

Be sure to regularly check the fire detectors throughout your home or property to ensure they have working batteries and are operating properly. You can do this fairly easily by pressing the little button on your smoke detectors. If the alarm is loud and striking, that means it’s working properly. If the sound is weak and faint, or, worse yet, there’s no sound at all, then that means you’re in need of a battery change.

Regularly Clean The Lint Trap in Your Dryer

It can be easy to forget, but when lint backs up in your dryer it can create a dangerous fire hazard. Every so often it’s also a good idea to check behind your dryer to ensure no lint or articles of clothing have fallen back there and created a fire risk.

Clean Your Stove and Oven

One of the leading causes of stove or oven fires are food bits left behind from past meals that can combust the next time you’re cooking, so it’s important to clean your stove and oven regularly to ensure there’s nothing that could suddenly spark a kitchen fire. In that same line of thinking, be sure to always make sure things like towels or oven mitts are far enough away from your stove and/or oven that they won’t accidentally catch on fire.

And be sure to never leave the kitchen while cooking, because a fire can start quickly and can escalate even faster if you’re not there to take action right away. Remember that attacking grease fires will only further feed the flames, and that the best way to subdue a grease fire is to cover it and trap it.

Keep a Fire Extinguisher In Your Home or Property

You never know when you might need it, but when you do you’ll be glad you have it. Keep it somewhere that’s both safe and easily accessible in the event of an emergency, and be sure you and/or someone in your home or commercial property is properly trained to use a fire extinguisher.

5 Things To Keep In Mind When Filing a Fire Claim

5 Things To Keep In Mind When Filing a Fire Claim

Fire restoration is the act of repairing and cleaning property, but it occurs in stages and adds up. Homeowners in Krum, TX, must face the fact that returning to normal is going to take work and a significant financial investment. Residents with property insurance may file a claim, seeking compensation to assist in the repairs. The process, while extremely beneficial, requires organization and clear communication; therefore, it's best to keep in mind the following five tips when exploring this option.

1. Leave the Place Alone
Your fire insurance policy could be refused if you are found to further hurt the structure or land. It's best to leave the place as is until professionals can inspect the premises.

2. Protect the Residence
Fire restoration begins with safeguards. The conflagration most likely created holes that now expose the home to both trespassers and environmental hazards. These must be tended to immediately. A fire remediation company has the ability to board up the walls and tarp the roof. This should keep wind, animals and rain from further hurting the building.

3. Mitigate Secondary Damage
Firefighters used hoses to stop the blaze. While helpful, it also increased humidity levels. Allowing this to linger is problematic, possibly allowing bacteria and mold to grow. Before smoke cleaning and rebuilding can take place, the specialists should examine the area for moisture complications, drying out the space completely. Tear out may occur if contamination has occurred.

4. Document the Destruction
Evidence is vital to verify your request for aid. Take video or photographs of the devastation. This includes personal belongings. Make an itemized list, detailing the cost of the replacement.

5. Prepare for the Adjuster
The agency sends out someone to look over the situation. This usually happens after protective measures and before construction. Be present for this visit, walking around the property together. Discuss your concerns, and point out things that could be overlooked.
Fire restoration is the process of rehabilitating a home. Insurance companies often assist during this time. Be patient. Work with your agent to provide the information required to approve the claim.

Cooking is the leading cause of residential fires, accounting for 197,200 fires in 2018. Heating systems were the second leading cause of residential fires. Electronic malfunctions caused 25,700 fires in 2018. Aside from unintentionally/carelessly started fires, these were the three leading causes of residential fires over a ten year period.

Fires in Commercial Properties

9/2/2020 (Permalink)

Worm's eye view of a city sky. It is important to protect your commercial property from the threat of fires.

There are many different risks that come along with a owning a business. Some risks are a result of human error while others may arise out of natural (or unnatural) disasters. In 2018, 103,600 fires occurred in nonresidential buildings, resulting in over $2 million of loss. Data collected and analyzed by the U.S. Fire Administration shows that nonresidential fires increased by 26% between 2009 and 2018.

The most common cause of nonresidential fires is cooking and kitchen appliances, with 25-30% of nonresidential fires being cooking-related. Human error accounts for about 10% of nonresidential fires. This category includes forgetting to unplug appliances and electronics, improper disposal of cigarettes, and forgetting to blow out candles. The number of intentionally set fires is not far below the number of fires that were started intentionally or carelessly. In 2018, 10,200 fires were intentional. Finally, electric malfunctions account for about 7% of nonresidential fires.

The best way to protect your property from the threat of fires is to have smoke and fire alarms installed throughout the building. Make sure to test and have them serviced regularly to ensure that they are working and ready to go in the event that a fire does occur. Additionally, it can help to have motion sensor cameras set up around your property so you can respond quickly if you are a victim of arson. Most arson occurs in trash cans or dumpsters, so we sure that these areas of your business have a monitoring system in place so you can move quickly and minimize the damage.

If you did have a fire occur at your commercial property, SERVPRO ofDenton is here to help you get your business back up and running as quickly as possible. Call us today at(940)566-2277 or submit an information form online. We are here to help!

Use Electrical Cords Safely

7/27/2020 (Permalink)

Electrical Outlet and Cord Extension cords can overheat and cause fires if you used incorrectly.

Did you know electrical cords are supposed to be used temporarily? Plus, they shouldn't be used for a major appliance.

Electrical Safety Foundation International (EFSI) offers several extension cord safety tips. Here are just a few:

  • Do not overload extension cords or allow them to run through water or snow on the ground.
  • Do not substitute extension cords for permanent wiring.
  • Do not run through walls, doorways, ceilings or floors. If cord is covered, heat cannot escape, which may result in a fire hazard.
  • Do not use an extension cord for more than one appliance.
  • Multiple plug outlets must be plugged directly into mounted electrical receptacles; they cannot be chained together.
  • Make sure the extension cord or temporary power strip you use is rated for the products to be plugged in, and is marked for either indoor or outdoor use.
  • The appliance or tool that you are using the cord with will have a wattage rating on it. Match this up with your extension cord, and do not use a cord that has a lower rating.
  • Never use a cord that feels hot or is damaged in any way. Touching even a single exposed strand can give you an electric shock or burn.
  • Never use three-prong plugs with outlets that only have two slots for the plug. Do not cut off the ground pin to force a fit. This defeats the purpose of a three-prong plug and could lead to an electrical shock. Never force a plug into an outlet if it doesn’t fit.
  • Buy only cords approved by an independent testing laboratory, such as Underwriters Laboratories (UL), Intertek (ETL) or Canadian Standards Association (CSA).

Causes of Electrical Fires

7/7/2020 (Permalink)

Electrical Outlet Faulty outlets can be a source for an electrical fire.

On average, 24000 electrical fires occur in the U.S. per year, according to the U.S. Fire Administration.

The top causes of electrical fires are the following:

  • Faulty outlets/appliances. Never use an appliance or a cord that is frayed or chewed. In addition, do not run cords under rugs.
  • Light Fixtures. Light fixtures, lamps and light bulbs can all be sources of an electrical fire. These could occur by installing a bulb with too high of wattage or placing items on top of a lamp shade.
  • Extension cords. Misuse of these cords can cause fires, as they should not be used all the time rather appliances should be plugged into outlets.
  • Space heaters. Heaters often are left in front of/on combustible surfaces like curtains, rugs. Coil heaters are the most dangerous.
  • Wiring. Outdated wiring can also be a source of fire. If a home is over 20 years old, the wiring may not have the ability to handle appliances in today's homes.

Destroy Odors with DEODORIZATION

5/8/2020 (Permalink)

fire damage, smoke damage, home Bri removes and deodorizes a local home in the Denton area.

Even a small fire can cause odors for years to come if the affected areas are not properly cleaned and deodorized. Fire, smoke, and soot damage in your home or business can create unpleasant and potentially permanent problems.

As various materials burn, the smoke produced travels throughout the structure, leaving odorous residues and deposits on surfaces and in hard-to-reach places. Unless fast, professional action is taken, these residues and deposits can cause permanent damage to contents and may result in resurfacing odors.

With technicians certified by the Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration (IICRC), SERVPRO® of Denton provides specialized services that can rid your home or business of offensive odors left by fire or smoke damage. SERVPRO® of Denton professionals do not cover up lingering odors with a fragrance; they seek out and remove the source of the odor. Once the source is found, SERVPRO’s own proprietary line of cleaning products is used to treat and prevent the odor from returning. Any restorable item in affected areas will also be professionally cleaned and deodorized, including furniture, draperies and upholstery, electronics, art, flooring, walls, ceilings, HVAC air ducts and more.

Ask SERVPRO® of Denton to explain the various deodorization methods available and which one will work best for you. If you or one of your customers suffer a fire damage or some other accident and require deodorization services, contact us immediately. Whether it’s fire, water, or mold damage or just a stubborn odor that refuses to go away, we’ll help make it “Like it never even happened.”

Importance of Portable Fire Extinguishers

4/14/2020 (Permalink)

fire damage, smoke damage, home A fire extinguisher can save lives and property.

Portable fire extinguishers can be life and property saving tools when used correctly during a fire incident. In order to operate an extinguisher, the National Fire Protection Agency (NFPA) suggest remembering the word PASS:

P: Pull the pin. Hold the nozzle pointing away from you and release the locking mechanism.

A: Aim low. Point the extinguisher at the base of the fire.

S: Squeeze the lever slowly and evenly.

S: Sweep the nozzle from side-to-side.

Read the instructions for the fire extinguisher and become familiar with them before a fire occurs. Remember, extinguishers do have limitations and lifespans. It is also important to ensure your facility has the right type of extinguisher, as well. To find out more info, visit NFPA website at NFPA.org.

Smoke Alarms: Life Savers

3/4/2020 (Permalink)

smoke alarm - fire damage - smoke damage - fire prevention For more information on Emergency Preparedness, please contact SERVPRO of Denton.

Smoke alarms save lives when properly installed and maintained, according to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA).

In homes, smoke alarms should be in every bedroom and on every level, including the basement. In office and commercial environments, check your state requirements or contact your local Fire Marshall to help ensure all codes are met.

Test smoke alarms monthly using the test button. Smoke alarms with non-replaceable batteries need the entire smoke alarm unit replaced every ten years. If the alarm chirps signaling low battery, take the proper steps to replace the unit or the battery immediately. Never disable or remove the battery from an alarm. Almost half of fires where smoke alarms were present but did not activate had missing or disconnected batteries (NFPA).

In larger commercial facilities, hard wired or wireless smoke alarms offer benefits such as not needing to be tested as often and activating throughout the entire building if smoke is detected in just one area.

If you need help installing, testing or changing batteries in your smoke alarms, contact your local fire department, an electrician or the American Red Cross.

Be sure your home or workplace has a fire emergency plan in place and conduct regular fire drills. For more information on Emergency Preparedness, please contact SERVPRO of Denton.

The damage to your property following a fire can often be complicated due to the unique behavior of smoke. There are two different types of smoke --wet and dry. As a result, there are different types of soot residue after a fire.

SERVPRO franchise professionals are thoroughly trained in fire cleanup and restoration and know the different types of smoke and their behavior patterns. Knowing this information is vital to proper restoration. Before restoration begins, SERVPRO professionals will survey the loss to determine the extent of impact from fire, smoke, heat, and moisture on the building materials and its contents. The soot will then be tested to determine which type of smoke damage occurred. Pretesting determines the proper cleaning method and allows our professionals to focus on saving your precious items.

SERVPRO of Denton professionals know that smoke can penetrate various cavities within the structure, causing hidden damage and odor. Their knowledge of building systems helps them to investigate how far smoke damage may have spread. The following points are additional facts you may not know about smoke.

  • Smoke flows around plumbing systems, seeping through the holes used by pipes to go from floor to floor.
  • They type of smoke may greatly affect the restoration process.

TYPES OF SMOKE:

  • Wet Smoke. (Plastic and Rubber) Low heat, smoldering, pungent odor, sticky, and smeary. Smoke webs are more difficult to clean.
  • Dry Smoke. (Paper and Wood) Fast-burning, high temperatures; heat rises, therefore smoke rises.
  • Protein Fire Residue. (Produced by evaporation of material rather than from a fire) Virtually invisible, discolors paints and varnishes, extreme pungent odor.
  • Fuel Oil Soot. (Furnace puff backs) While “puff backs” can create havoc for homeowners, SERVPRO franchise professionals can, in most cases, restore the contents and structure quickly.
  • Other types. (tear gas, fingerprint powder, and fire extinguisher residue) Special loss situations require special care.

Our professional crews are trained to handle even the toughest of losses. If your home or business suffers fire or smoke damage, contact SERVPRO of Denton to help make it “Like it never even happened.”

What to Expect During a Fire You Weren't Expecting

2/5/2020 (Permalink)

fire damage, smoke damage, home Fires are an overwhelming and stressful process. Let us take the reigns.

A fire damage event is difficult for the home or business owner on many levels, and the restoration process that follows can be intimidating. Today we are sharing what you can expect from a fire restoration project. Each fire event is a little different, and each will require a unique solution, although the overall general process stays the same. The steps we are listing below will illustrate the SERVPRO process for the average fire damage emergency.

  • Emergency Contact. Your restoration process begins the moment that you contact us. Our representative will ask you questions regarding the fire damage event that will help us to respond with the appropriate equipment and resources for your particular situation.
  • Inspection and Fire Damage Assessment. Our team will carefully inspect and test all the adjoining rooms of your home or business to determine the extent of the fire, smoke, and soot damage. This step is vital to us, allowing us to develop the perfect plan of action for your property.
  • Immediate Board-Up and Roof-Tarp Service. Fire damage will often compromise the condition of windows, walls, and roofing. To maintain security and to protect against further damage, we will board up missing windows and walls, and place tarps on damaged areas of the roof.
  • Water Removal and Drying. If water damage is present, the water removal process will begin almost immediately, with the goal of removing the majority of the water. Our team will then employ dehumidifiers and air movers to remove any remaining water and complete the drying process.
  • Removal of Smoke and Soot From All Surfaces. SERVPRO uses specialized equipment and techniques to remove smoke and soot from ceilings, walls, and all other surfaces.
  • Cleaning and Sanitizing. We clean, sanitize, and disinfect all of the restorable items and structures that were damaged by the fire. Our team uses a variety of cleaning techniques to restore your belongings to the condition they were in before the fire. We are also trained to remove lingering odors, using industrial air scrubbers and fogging equipment.
  • Restoration. This is the final step - getting your home or business back to its pre-fire condition. Restoration may involve minor repairs, such as replacing drywall, installing new carpet, or painting surfaces, or it may entail major repairs, such as the reconstruction of various rooms or areas.

Here at SERVPRO of Denton, we are ready to help if your Texas home or business suffers from damage due to fire or water. You can also count on us when it comes to mold remediation and prevention.

Every Second Counts

1/15/2020 (Permalink)

fire damage, smoke damage, home Practice your fire escape plan during the day and nighttime.

Every second counts during a fire. Fire experts agree; people have as little as two minutes to escape a burning home before it’s too late to get out. In a matter of moments, a small flame can become a major fire, making it critical to be prepared and have an escape plan in place. A survey conducted by the American Red Cross shows only 26 percent of families and businesses have developed and practiced a fire escape plan. Once a plan is developed, it is critical everyone in the home or office understands the plan. The best way to do this is by practicing the escape plan at least twice a year. Increase your chance of surviving a fire by ensuring you have working smoke detectors in place, building an escape plan, and then practicing it. The following are a few suggestions to help you develop an emergency escape plan:

  • Draw a map of each level of your home or business and show all the doors and windows. Find two ways to get out of each room. Make sure all doors and windows that lead outside open easily.
  • Consider escape ladders for sleeping areas on the second and third floors. Only purchase collapsible ladders evaluated by a recognized testing laboratory. Store them near the window where they will be used.
  • Choose an outside meeting place a safe distance in front of your home where everyone can meet after they’ve escaped. Make sure to mark the location of the meeting area on your escape plan.
  • Teach children how to escape on their own in case you cannot help them. Plan for everyone in your home or office, with special considerations for elderly or disabled individuals.
  • Practice your fire escape plan during the day and nighttime.

Twinkles vs. Sparks

Holiday Fire Preparedness With just a little extra attention, you can enjoy beautiful and safe decorations in your home this holiday season.

Holiday decorations are a significant part of the season. Trees, lights, and candles help create the holiday environments that are a part of some of our best memories. While all of the decorations are great ways to enjoy the holiday season, they can also be a cause for concern if the right precautions are not taken.

To protect your home in the midst of beautiful holiday decorations, The U.S. Fire Administration recommends paying close attention to the following 3 areas: trees, lights and candles.

Nothing replaces the scent of a real Christmas tree, but real Christmas trees require extra attention. Making sure your Christmas tree does not dry out is crucial for the safety of your home. Also, keeping the tree a safe distance from heat sources is important.

Lights are a beautiful way to decorate your home for the holidays. Making sure they are in working condition without fraying is important. Also, reading the manufacturer’s instructions can help make important decisions about when to connect another strand vs when to find another plug.

Finally, according to the U.S. Fire Administration, “More than half of the home decoration fires in December are started by candles.” Keeping candles a safe distance from flammable objects and remembering to extinguish them are important for the safety of your home.

With just a little extra attention, you can enjoy beautiful and safe decorations in your home this holiday season.

Dallas Home Board Up Window board-ups in Dallas, TX

SERVPRO of Denton is faster to any disaster. Our production team is on call 24/7 for when there is an emergency. Our emergency services do not restrict us to just removing large quantities of water. In the event of a fire or a storm, there are multiple safety precautions that are taken. Most fires cause windows to bust due to the pressure; fire fighters bust down front doors, interior doors, and anything in the way in order to extinguish a fire. Once a fire courses through a home or business, structural issues need to be considered. When a fire is put out, until a structural engineer can make it on-site, we perform board-ups to the windows and doors that were damaged during the fire. This is an emergency service that we provide that can give some comfort and peace-of-mind that no one can get into your home and steal your belongings while you are being put out of your home. It also protects the home or business from further damage such as wind, rain, or any other natural forces. When using this emergency service, it does not bind the customer to use our mitigation services. This is an additional service that we wanted to be available to the members of our community. This photo was taken inside of a home in Dallas after the October 2019 tornado swept through the area. After the storm, the windows were unstable and shattered in multiple areas of the home. This family wanted our team to secure their home so that no one could get into the home without a key.

Fireplace Make sure and keep all decorations three feet away from an open flame.

Pretty lights, candles, and decorations are just a few of the items bringing charm and cheer to the holiday season—however, if they are not used carefully, your holidays may go from festive to frightening.

The American Red Cross offers the following safety tips to help greatly reduce the fire risk in your home or business this holiday season.

  • Place Christmas trees, candles, and other holiday decorations at least three feet away from heat sources like fireplaces, portable heaters, radiators, heat vents, and candles.
  • Make sure light strings and other holiday decorations are in good condition. Do not use anything with frayed electrical cords and always follow the manufacturer’s instructions.
  • Always unplug tree and holiday lights before leaving the property or going to bed.
  • Never use lit candles to decorate a tree. Always extinguish candles before leaving the room or before going to bed.
  • Use only sturdy tree stands designed to not tip over. Keep curious pets and children away from Christmas trees.
  • Keep anything that can catch on fire—like pot holders, oven mitts, wooden utensils, paper of plastic bags, food packaging, and towels or curtains—away from your stove top.
  • Designate one person to walk around your property to ensure all candles and smoking materials are properly extinguished after guests leave.

Smoke Detectors Save Lives!

11/18/2019 (Permalink)

smoke detector If you or anyone you know have been effected by fire, call SERVPRO of Denton at (940) 514-8785

Smoke alarms save lives when they are installed properly, maintained and checked periodically to make sure they are in working order.

In a home, there should be a smoke alarm in every bedroom on every level of the home. In an office or commercial environment, check with your state requirements or contact your local Fire Marshall to help ensure all the codes are met.

Every month you should use the test button to test the smoke alarms. Smoke alarms with non-replaceable batteries should be replaced every 10 years. Other alarms need batteries replaced every year and the unit replaced every 10 years. Do not ignore the chirp of an alarm battery. That noise is an indication that the battery is low. Take the proper steps to replace the unit or the batteries immediately. Never disable or remove the battery from the alarm. Almost half of fire where smoke alarms were present but did not activate had missing or disconnected batteries (NFPA).

If you need help installing, testing or changing batteries in your smoke alarms, contact your local fire department, an electrician or the American Red Cross.

Be sure your home or workplace has a fire emergency plan in place and conduct regular fire drills. For more information on Emergency Preparedness, contact SERVPRO of Denton at 940-514-8785

How Can You Minimize the Risk of Space Heater Fires at Home?

11/18/2019 (Permalink)

If you stop and consider the ways in which your home may be at risk for fire, you could come up with a startling lengthy list. Near the top of the list of these potential causes is the dreaded space heater. A burned space heater can be a nasty culprit for disastrous fires. Understand how these heaters can causes fires and what you can do to eliminate the risks.

An Overview

While it’s true that space heaters are common causes for fires and need for smoke cleanup, reducing fire risks doesn’t have to be complicated. In fact, with a few simple steps, you should be able to avoid a burned space heater in most circumstances.

• Turn off your space heater if you leave the area for an extended period.
• Clean the filters regularly.
• Leave plenty of space around the heater.

Turn it Off

A space heater can be your best friend on a cold day if your furnace isn’t working well or if you don’t have one. You may be thinking leaving it on all day will help warm up your home faster and more effectively. However, this will only increase the likelihood of it having problems or starting fires. When you leave your home, or if you don’t plan on being in a certain part of your house for a while, turn it off.

Clean the Filter

Don’t put off this important step. Keep extra filters handy and replace them as they become dirty. When in doubt, consult your owner’s manual. It’s better to change it out unnecessarily than to leave it in too long.

Situate it properly

Don’t put your space heater in a cramped space or near blankets. Also, don’t plug in multiple space heaters in a single outlet.

If your space heater does cause a fire, get in touch with a professional smoke cleanup crew right away. However, if you follow these guidelines, you shouldn’t have to worry about fire or smoke concerns from a burned space heater.

Family Fire Safety Tips

9/3/2019 (Permalink)

fire lit in fireplace Fire lit in a fireplace.

As cool weather rolls in, homeowners everywhere are making their homes cozy and warm with fire features. Whether you’re roasting s’mores over a fire pit or are cozying up in front of your fireplace with some hot cocoa, it’s important that you know how to handle the hot flames of a fire. Before you strike that match, take a look at these fire safety tips to help keep you, your family, and your home safe this holiday season.

Family Fire Safety Tips

Preparing your home and family for a fire is the first step towards making sure they are safe during an emergency. When preparing for an emergency and practicing fire safety, always be sure to:

  • Install smoke alarms on every level of your home. Be sure to place them inside your bedrooms. For added security, connect all of your alarms so that they all go off at the same time if one is triggered.
  • Test your smoke alarms at least once a month. Replace batteries once a year or when it “chirps” to tell you the battery is low. If your smoke alarm is over 10 years old, it should be replaced with a new one.
  • Establish a fire escape plan with all of your family members. Practice your plan twice a year, updating meeting places, exits, and contact numbers as needed.
  • If a fire occurs in your home, get out and stay out. Then, call for help. Do not go back inside until it is deemed safe by emergency personnel.
  • If you are using a space heater, make sure it is at least three feet from anything that could catch on fire.
  • Do not burn candles within one foot of anything that could burn. Make sure you blow it out before leaving the room or going to sleep for the night.
  • Replace any cords that are cracked, damaged, have loose connections, or have broken plugs.
  • Always keep a fire extinguisher handy. A single spark can start a house fire —so it's best to be prepared.
  • Never run into a room filled with smoke or flames.

Fireplace Safety

If you plan to use your fireplace or fire pit this holiday season, it is essential to make sure you know how to use and take care of them. Ensuring a clean chimney system will prolong the fireplace life and usage for years to come.

Basic Fireplace Tips

  • Avoid using wet, rotten, diseased, or moldy wood. When finding fuel to burn in your fireplace, stick with dry, large pieces of wood.
  • Never use gas or lighter fluid to ignite your fire. Instead, use newspaper or kindling.
  • Get your chimney professionally cleaned before using it. A chimney sweep has all of the knowledge, tools, and experience to make sure it is clean, clear, and ready for use.
  • Build your fire slowly, and add more wood as the fire heats up and grows.
  • Always make sure your fire is completely put out before leaving the house or going to bed.

How do Fireplaces Cause House Fires?

After several fires, smoke attaches to the inner chimney lining, creating a dark, sticky, and flaky material called Creosote. When Creosote catches on fire, the inner liners, usually made out of clay or metal, can crack and become distorted from the high temperatures, causing your chimney and fireplace to become vulnerable and unsafe.

Fire Pits

Fire pits are the perfect place to gather and make memories with friends and family over conversation and s’mores. But as fun as they may be, it is extremely important for homeowners to exercise caution around them. Keep these tips in mind when using your fire pit.

  • Install the fire pit at least 10 feet away from structures and anything flammable.
  • Make sure to place the fire pit on a solid surface in an open area, never put it underneath trees or an overhanging roof.
  • Always pay attention to the fire pit and never leave it unattended. It is wise to keep a fire extinguisher nearby and you should always make sure that the fire is completely out before going inside.

What do I do if My House Catches on Fire?

You now know how to take safety measures in preventing a fire from starting inside your home. But what should you do if your house does catch on fire?

  1. If you see that your fire is getting out of control, extinguish it immediately using your fire extinguisher.
  2. If the fire is already out of control, be sure to raise an alarm and get everyone out of the house as quickly as possible.
  3. Once you and your family are all safely out of the house, call 911. Do not stop inside your home to make the call.
  4. Once the house is safe to re-enter, contact your insurance company to begin the claim and restoration process.
  5. Call SERVPRO of Denton to take care of the rest! From handling the fire and water damage to removing the odor, SERVPRO of Denton will restore your home “Like It Never Even Happened!”

Avoid Fires this Halloween

10/30/2018 (Permalink)

Pumpkins are all fun and games, as long as they are properly supervised!

Fire Prevention Month is almost to an end, but that does not mean to let up on the safety in your home. Halloween fires have cause 10,100 fires between 2014 to 2016 alone, causing over $102 million dollars in property loss. So how should you protect your family on this spooky day?

3 Quick Tips to Reduce Fires

  1. Instead of leaving a lit candle unsupervised as you handle all the Halloween festivities, make sure to use a led candle light instead. Or try adding spooky effects like different colored glow sticks.
  2. Don’t get caught without wearing a flame-retardant costume! From capes, to hats, to a “witch’s broom”, one wrong turn could leave room to something to catching on fire.
  3. Double think your fall decoration! Scarecrows and bales of hay may add that fall harvest look to your home, but dried material ignite easier and faster than some other décor. Make sure there isn’t any lit candles that could accidentally start an unnecessary fire.

When in doubt, make sure that there is a safe path to exit the home as well as fire extinguishers readily available.

How to Stop Fire Damage From Ruining Your Business Electronics

8/30/2018 (Permalink)

Fire damage in Ponder, TX

Electronic equipment is often central to business operations. When a fire strikes your business in Ponder, TX, this equipment risks being damaged and potentially irreparable. With the expertise on dealing with electronics after an electrical fire, you can salvage them before the damage becomes too severe.

Types of Fire Damage for Electronics

Electronics are more delicate towards smoke than others assets around a typical office. The damage to these items can come from a variety of fire-related sources:

  • Smoke infiltrating the insides of electronics and leaving a black film that insulates the circuitry that leads to overheating
  • Acidic soot deteriorating both exterior and interior of the equipment and cause malfunctions
  • Magnetism of smoke shorting circuits and leading to overheating or fire risk

What to Do in the Immediate Aftermath of a Fire

After an electrical fire, everything should be evaluated for exposure or damage. If you notice a device that was in a smoky area or suspect one received residual smoke, you should disconnect it immediately. This prevent additional damage and stops a short circuit from becoming another fire while the area is unused and unmonitored.

Once unplugged, any damaged computer should be opened to disconnect and safely relocate the most important asset: its hard drive. Computer cleanup could end up impossible due to damage, but the hard drive can often be saved. It is where all important documents like spreadsheets are stored. A hard drive transfers between different computers, so you can easily resume operations.

Cleaning Up the Fire Damage

While attempts can be made to repair electronics yourself, it requires knowledge of circuitry and wiring of the specific product. You could end up doing more harm than good with improper tools and handling. If you have no warranty option, everything damaged by fire or smoke is best left with a professional fire damage restoration service for repairs.

By taking proactive measures following a fire, the chance of asset recovery is greater. An electrical fire does not have to claim every electronic in your business, and you can stop it from doing so.

Safety Tips for Grilling Season

7/23/2018 (Permalink)

Avoiding a grill fire is actually pretty easy.

Nothing says backyard fun like firing up the grill and cooking outdoors. Nothing puts a damper on that fun, however, as much as a grill fire. To keep the party going in Denton, TX, and the local fire department at bay, here are a few safety tips for grilling season.

1. Establish a Perimeter

An outdoor grill needs space to breathe. Anything that puts off that much heat should be kept at a respectable distance from both objects and people. Keep children and pets away from the grill any time it is in use. To avoid a BBQ fire when you open the lid, make sure there is plenty of space for it to vent. Fire restoration experts recommend that you not use the grill while it is under low-hanging eaves or branches of a nearby tree. You want to keep BBQ smoke damage off your house. Save the char for the steaks.

2. Monitor Flammable Substances

No matter what kind of grill you own, you likely have some substance, whether gas or charcoal lighting fluid, to get the fire started in the grill. To keep a manageable flame from turning into a full-fledged grill fire, you need to monitor these substances. If you smell gas when your propane grill is in use, don't ignore it. If necessary, call the fire department. Keep lighter fluid out of the reach of children.

3. Clean After Use

Built-up grease is a fire waiting to happen. Clean your grill after every use. A wire brush and water with a little dish soap is all it takes to ensure that your grill is clean and ready to store. Most grills have removable grates that make cleaning even easier. Just take them off, scrub them and rinse them with a garden hose.

Avoiding a grill fire is actually pretty easy. You only need to be mindful of your surroundings and make sure you don't let grease build up over time. By following these tips, you can have a safe and happy grilling season. For more information, visit http://www.SERVPROdenton.com/.

SERVPRO of Denton is ready to help with any fire emergency, 24 hour a day, 365 days a year!

Summers in Texas are known for being hot but they are also known for bringing people out of their homes. Gas grills and fire pits become the norm for summer gatherings but both things must be handled with caution to help reduce the risk of a house fire. House fires caused by barbecues and fire pits can cause extensive fire and smoke damage to your home if not properly handles correctly but by following these preventative actions, you can help reduce the risk of a house fire this summer.

Gas Grills

Gas grills appear everywhere in the summer but homeowners need to use caution when grilling out.  According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) there are over 8,000 house fires each year caused by grills so it is important to follow these tips to help avoid grill-related fires:

  • Make sure the grill is a safe distance from the house and other structures.  It is not safe to grill under any kind of overhang such as in a garage, porch, breezeway, or awning.
  • Inspect the gas line and hoses for cracks that could cause propane leaks by putting soapy water over the hose and fittings and looking for bubbles to form off the equipment.  All leaking issues should be addressed before attempting to grill again.
  • Always light a gas grill with the lid open and keep a spray water bottle or fire extinguisher handy in case the flames flare up.

Fire Pits

Fire pits are also a very common sight in the summer months but it is important for homeowners to always exercise caution when using fire pits especially when using them for social gatherings.

  • Install the fire pit at least 10 feet away from structures and anything flammable.
  • Make sure to place the fire pit on a solid surface in an open area, never put it underneath trees or an overhanging roof.
  • Always pay attention to the fire pit and never leave it. It is wise to keep a fire extinguisher nearby and you should make sure that the fire is completely out before going inside.

Following these few simple safety tips when it comes to using fire pits or gas grills can help reduce a chance for a home fire making for an enjoyable and worry-free summer. If your home does sustain damage from a fire this summer, SERVPRO of Denton is ready to help! Call us at 940-566-2277

Filing a Smoke or Fire Insurance Claim

5/20/2018 (Permalink)

fire damage, smoke damage, home If you have had a fire at your business, keeping calm and working with your insurance company can help your business get back on its feet in no time.

A fire occurring at your place of business can put a lot of different problems on your plate at once, and at times it can be devastating. Luckily, insurance claims for smoke damaged and fire damage are often covered by many insurance carriers. Documenting the incident may not seem important right after a fire happens, but keeping a well organized list of details about the event can help smooth the process of filing a claim with your insurance company.

How You Can Help

Keeping in mind that your insurance policy likely covers damage from fire, make a list of the following to give to your adjuster:

• Date of loss
• Whether the damage was from fire and smoke, or strictly smoke damage
• Location of damage
• Other parties involved
• Condition of the property
• Any content damaged as a result of the fire and if the items can be repaired
• Related injuries
• A police and fire department report

There is usually a section in your policy that outlines a specific time frame during which you can file your claim after the date of loss. Familiarizing yourself with your policy is a great course of action in order to give yourself the necessary tools in the unfortunate event that you have fire damage, smoke damage, or soot damage. You will likely exchange many emails and phone conversations with various contractors and insurance agents during this time as well. Keeping these conversations organized and documented can save you from future headache.

The Aftermath

A good insurance policy can lessen the sting of a fire’s aftermath. In fact, many carriers will work with you through the process of rebuilding. Generally, insurance adjusters understand reasonable requests from policyholders, such as requesting that your local Denton, TX, contractor is IICRC-certified. If you have had a fire at your business, keeping composure and working with your insurance company can help your business get back on its feet in no time. When Lightning Strikes

4/4/2018 (Permalink)

Are You Ready To Be Lightning Safe?

Whether building a new home, remodeling an existing home or even repairing a home that has been damaged, a lightning protection system can be a worthwhile investment, according to the Insurance Information Institute (I.I.I.).

Damage caused by lightning, such as fire, is covered by standard homeowners insurance policies; and some policies provide coverage for damage from power surges that are the direct result of a lightning strike.

“Lightning losses were $790 million in 2015 and the average cost per claim rose 64 percent from 2010 to 2015,” explained Loretta Worters, a vice president with the I.I.I. “The $3,000 or $4,000 it will cost to install a lightning protection system could prevent a deadly house fire and save on costly repairs,” she added.

The growing market for smart home technology makes installing a lightning protection system even more important, noted the I.I.I. It is also an opportunity for designers, builders and code officials to include lightning protection systems in their plans.

“Just as smart homes provide the ultimate in safety and comfort, lightning protection systems ensure that state-of-the-art home automation systems aren’t damaged by direct or nearby lightning strikes,” said Kimberly Loehr, director of Communications for the Lightning Protection Institute (LPI). “Lightning’s harmful surges can damage these internal building systems, which can be quite expensive to restore.”

A lightning protection system does not attract lightning, a common misconception, noted the LPI. Lightning will strike a location whether there is lightning protection in place or not. A lightning protection system directs the harmful current from a lightning strike to the ground, leaving the structure and its contents undamaged.

“Keep in mind lightning protection system design and installation is complex and not a do-it-yourself project,” said Loehr. “Installation is not typically within the scope of expertise held by general contractors, roofers or even electricians--which is why the work is typically sub-contracted out to specialists.”

Always hire an LPI-certified expert who specializes in lightning protection and utilizes UL-listed components and equipment to install your system, and make sure the materials and methods comply with national safety standards. Use the LPI’s “Find An Installer” tool to locate an LPI-certified lightning protection system installer in your area.

“If you contract to install a lightning protection system, keep the receipt and let your insurance professional know about this improvement. That will ensure it is included in the cost of rebuilding your home should a disaster occur,” said Worters. “It may even help reduce your insurance costs.”
